Our Bunya trip

Little Falls

On 27-29 January - our Australia Day weekend - We travelled approx. 3 hrs north-west of Brisbane to the Bunya Mountains National Park. The Bunya Mountains were formed about 30million years ago from volcanic activity.

The park is the largest remaining stand of Bunya Pines in the world and covers 11.700 hectares of rainforest, natural grasslands, eucalypt forests, streams and waterfalls. There are many walking tracks which allow visitors to easily explore the beautiful surrounds. With a relatively early start on Saturday morning

we headed off to find the beautiful waterfalls to be found on the many walks through the forests. However, you can see by the trickle of water in each of them, that we are currently in the grip of a serious drought. None-the-less, the trickles were as spectacular as a trickle can be and the gorges were lovely.

Paradise Falls

Big Falls

Rainforest covers most of the mountains, with Bunya Pines and Hoop Pines throughout as can be seen in the pics above. But then you will walk out of the forest into open grasslands and be amazed at the suddenness of the change.

Festoon Falls

And around the next bend open eucalypt forests and woodlands with one of the most wonderful of Australian flora, the iconic grasstrees, some of which are several hundred years old.

The rainforests are known for their bird life with riflebirds, whipbirds, bower-birds and scrub- turkeys. But there are also lots of other beautiful Australian fauna, some of which can be just a little cheeky, but also very cute. Note the wallaby's full pouch - a little joey (baby) was hiding inside. Mum continued to munch on the grass as we stood only 1 m away to take the photos. So beautiful.

Well, we had a great time and even survived living together in a tent!!!. We didn't swear at each other or throw things, or sulk!!! Not bad for having known each other just over 1 mth. But a weekend was too short. So .... we are soon heading off on our next adventure - 5 days of camping. Now this will be a test.

Back again soon

Great photos. The Bunya's are a special place and it makes me a touch homesick to see them again.
